DAUPHIN ISLAND, AL-We’re just days away from one of the most exciting traditions on the Gulf Coast! The annual Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo kicks off its Roy Martin Young Anglers Tournament this Saturday.
Even though it’s only two days away, you can still register to take your child fishing. Organizers say this event attracts about 1,500 young anglers each year. Some kids will catch fish bigger than them!
“We get to watch these kids come in with these big fish or a little fish and they’re just very proud of them,” said Captain Richard Rutland, president of the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo.
He says all families are welcome, no matter how much experience they have. These kids can fish on a boat or even just off a dock nearby.
The tournament starts this Saturday at 5 a.m. and will last until 5 p.m. The weigh station will open at 9 a.m. at the ADSFR site on Dauphin Island.
Children must be 15-years-old or younger to participate and tickets cost $3 per angler, which you can buy at local Academy stores and local tackle shops. You can also buy a ticket at the tournament.
“Drop your boat in the water, go to the dock, do your thing, go fishing, come in with your fish and you can go buy a ticket and then weigh your fish in,” said Rutland.
Children that weigh in will get a certificate, a free hot dog and ice-cream. Anglers that place in the tournament can win a variety of prizes.
All proceeds benefit the Mobile Jaycees Children’s Christmas Shopping Tour to help underprivileged children. So come on out a drop line for a good time and a great cause!
